This rare, antique Balato dates from the end of the 19th century.
 
This Balato is still complete with the authentic basket, filled with spiritually powerful stones. These amulets serve as magical or spiritual objects.
 
The hilt is beautifully carved in the shape of a lasara. A lasara is a mythical beast characteristic of the art and culture of the island of Nias, this mythical composite animal always has the wide-open jaws of a crocodile with protruding tongue, the large teeth of a bear and small horns on both sides. On each 'lasara head' sits a small demon called a 'bekhu'. The 'bekhu' demon is always depicted as a small human or monkey.
 
The long blade has an almost straight spine and edge; the edge is rounded to the back at the point.
 
The two-piece wooden sheath is held together by 13 copper bands.
