A  bolo is a large cutting tool of Filipino origin similar to the machete. It is used particularly in the Philippines, the jungles of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, as well as in the sugar fields of Cuba. The primary use for the bolo was for clearing vegetation. The bolo became a favorite for use in Filipino martial arts or Arnis.
 
This bolo has an animal horn handle (carabao), a full tang, the steel blade that both curves and widens. This moves the centre of gravity as far forward as possible, giving the bolo extra momentum for slicing and chopping.
 
This particular ‘jungle bolo’ was intended for combat rather than agricultural work as it is longer and has a sharp tip. Bolos for forrest use usually have rounded tips.
 
The hilt of this bolo is carved from carabao horn and is shaped to the form of a clenched fist with the thumb raised. The heavy cross guard is forged from copper. This bolo comes complete with the original leather scabbard.  
 
The bolo was the primary weapon used by the Katipunan during the Philippine Revolution. It was also used by the Filipino guerrillas and bolomen during the Philippine–American War.

Een bolo is een groot zwaard van Filipijnse oorsprong vergelijkbaar met de machete. Het wordt vooral gebruikt in de Filippijnen, de oerwouden van Indonesië, Maleisië en Brunei, maar ook in de suikervelden van Cuba. Het primaire gebruik voor de bolo was voor het opruimen van vegetatie en daarna als strijdwapen. De bolo werd een favoriet voor gebruik in Filippijnse vechtsport Arnis.
 
Deze bolo heeft een greep van dierenhoorn (carabao), een volledige tang, de stalen kling buigt en verwijdt van vorm. Hierdoor wordt het zwaartepunt zo ver mogelijk naar voren verplaatst, waardoor de bolo extra vaart krijgt bij het snijden en hakken.
 
Deze specifieke 'jungle bolo' was eerder bedoeld voor gevechten dan voor landbouwwerk, omdat hij langer is en een scherpe punt heeft. Bolo's voor bosgebruik hebben meestal afgeronde punten.
 
De greep van deze bolo is gesneden uit carabaohoorn en heeft de vorm van een gebalde vuist met de duim omhoog. De zware pareerstang is van koper gesmeed. Deze bolo is compleet met de originele leren schede.
 
De bolo was het primaire wapen dat door de Katipunan werd gebruikt tijdens de Filippijnse revolutie. Het werd ook gebruikt door de Filippijnse guerrilla's en bolomen tijdens de Filippijns-Amerikaanse Oorlog.
