This magnificent Tilam Upih, Udan Mas keris dates from the Tuban Mataram-era (15th century).
 
The ancient wilah is a very fine example of Tuban mastership. I recently had the wilah of this keris professionally and ritually washed in Indonesia, making the snow-white Udan Mas pamor motif sparkle again, against the jet-black background of the wilah.
 
Pamor Udan Mas is one of the legendary pamor motifs that is very famous in the keris world not only in Java but also in other areas including Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam. This prestige is often seen as the sugih prestige whose luck can keep the owner "overloaded" with heavy food. Javanese call it kuwat kebandan (rich talent). Because of this belief, many people, especially those who work as merchants and businessmen, want a keris, spear or sword with an udan mas pamor. Apart from the esoteric factor, from the technical side, the forging is not easy and economicly expensive (scarcity market) is also influential which makes the value of pamor udan mas is highest compared to the pamor motif with other round pamor patterns (bonang rinenteng, sekar kopi, melati sinebar, etc.). Udan = rain, Mas = gold, literally means "rain of gold", as a symbol of wealth, prosperity and high morals. The meaning is sabda dadi, which means to hope that all desires that come from a clear heart or soul will come true.
 
In addition to the rare pamor, the wilah is forged to Tilam Upih dapur. Dapur Tilam Upih is a straight dapur keris classified as very simple with no other bells and whistles. It is said that the Dhapur Tilam Upih was first forged by Empu Brama Kadhali in the Nata Praja Buddawaka era. The popularity of this dapur is not without reason, it is a dapur that is neat and not too crowded which makes many people willing to wear it. On the other hand, until now there is a strong belief in the community that isoteric, powerful heirlooms are usually found in a simple (straight) dhapur such as brojol and tilam upih and not in the more complex dapurs. Moreover, according to ancient records, almost all qualified masters of the Pajajaran era up to Mataram preached the two dapurs in their spiritual works. A keris with Tilam Upih dapur possesses spiritual properties that enhances its owner in his masculinity. It optimizes the relationship with his life partner and allows him to maintain and protect his family.
 
 
The keris is housed in a Solo Ladrang warangka and gandar of the scarce galih asem wood. Galih asem has a philosophy used by warriors, so that Javanese galeh asem wood, which is known to be hard and sinks in water, is considered warrior wood. Behind that galih asem implies a deep meaning in this life, so that one is able to face all existing problems and become a champion. Galeh asem stands for ‘digih Kanti mesem’ or contemplating while smiling, where in observing all problems, you need calmness in looking at various different points of view while smiling, so that you will find the best way that suits your heart and thoughts, therefore the problem can be resolved smoothly. You will solve the problem as a champion, because everything has a way out.
 
The top of the keris is adorned with a Nunggak-semi hilt with deeply carved patra-patra’s.

Deze prachtige Tilam Upih, Udan Mas keris dateert uit het Tuban Mataram-tijdperk (15e eeuw).
 
De oude wilah is een heel mooi voorbeeld van Tuban-meesterschap. De wilah van deze keris heb ik onlangs professioneel en ritueel laten wassen in Indonesië, waardoor het sneeuwwitte Udan Mas pamormotief weer schittert tegen de gitzwarte achtergrond van de wilah.
 
Pamor Udan Mas is een van de legendarische pamormotieven die zeer beroemd is in de keriswereld, niet alleen op Java maar ook in andere gebieden, waaronder Maleisië tot Brunei Darussalam. Dit pamor wordt vaak gezien als het sugih-pamor wiens geluk de eigenaar "overlaad" houdt met zwaar voedsel. Javanen noemen het kuwat kebandan (rijk talent). Vanwege dit geloof willen veel mensen, vooral degenen die als koopman en zakenman werken, een keris, speer of zwaard met een udan mas pamor. Afgezien van de esoterische factor, vanuit de technische kant, is het smeden niet eenvoudig en economisch duur (schaarstemarkt) en ook invloedrijk waardoor de waarde van pamor udan mas het hoogst is vergeleken met het pamormotief met andere ronde pamorpatronen (bonang rinenteng, sekar kopi, melati sinebar, enz.). Udan = regen, Mas = goud, betekent letterlijk "regen van goud", als symbool van rijkdom, welvaart en hoge moraal. De betekenis is sabda dadi, wat betekent: hopen dat alle verlangens die uit een helder hart of ziel komen, zullen uitkomen.
 
Naast de zeldzame pamor wordt de wilah gesmeed naar Tilam Upih dapur.  De populariteit van deze dapur is niet voor niets, het is een dapur die netjes is en niet te druk waardoor veel mensen hem graag willen dragen.  Een keris met Tilam Upih dapur bezit spirituele eigenschappen die de mannelijkheid van de eigenaar versterken. Het optimaliseert de relatie met zijn levenspartner en stelt hem in staat zijn gezin te onderhouden en te beschermen.
 
De keris huist in een Solo Ladrang warangka en gandar van het schaarse galih asem-hout. Galih asem heeft een filosofie die door krijgers wordt gebruikt, zodat Javaans galeh asem-hout, waarvan bekend is dat het hard is en in water zinkt, als krijgershout wordt beschouwd. Daarachter schuilt galih asem een diepe betekenis in dit leven, zodat men in staat is alle bestaande problemen het hoofd te bieden en een kampioen te worden. Galeh asem staat voor 'digih Kanti mesem' of contempleren terwijl je glimlacht, waarbij je bij het observeren van alle problemen kalmte nodig hebt bij het kijken naar verschillende gezichtspunten terwijl je glimlacht, zodat je de beste manier vindt die bij je hart en gedachten past. Het probleem kan probleemloos worden opgelost. Je lost het probleem op als kampioen, want voor alles is een uitweg.
 
Aan bovenkant van de keris prijkt een Nunggak-semi-greep met diep gesneden patra-patra’s.
