Alamang (in Bugis language, sometimes Halamang or Lamang) or Sonri (in Makassarese language) is a sacred sword or cutlass of the Bugis and Makassarese people in Sulawesi, Indonesia.
 
The Alamang has a flattened, heavy and deeply indented hilt. The blade's edge and back are straight and parallel. The back curves towards the edge at the point.
 
The Alamang is a symbol of sovereignty, prosperity, and dignity of a kingdom. It is said that in the past the king would not leave his kingdom without his Alamang. As it is considered as the greatness of the kingdom, certainly the Alamang is very exclusive. Nobody including the empu (Kris maker) or blacksmith that have sworn, are allowed to make copies the Alamang for it is the weapon of the king. Those who failed to abide by this law were executed.
 
This Alamang originates from Lombok. Bugis people ordinally originate from Sulawesi but because they are a sea faring and trading nation, they also settled in other parts of Indonesia, also in Lombok.
 
The scabbard and hilt are fully encased in silver with amazingly detailed and deeply chased floral motifs.
 
On the front of the scabbard an equally beautiful toli-toli, set with 9 rubies and sapphires can be admired.  
 
The wilah (blade) of this antique Alamang is forged with two pamors; Kul Buntet at the base of the wilah and Ilining Warih which runs the length of the wilah. I had the wilah ritually and professionaly treated with warangan in Indonesia. The silver pamor contrasts beautifully against the jet-black background of the wilah.
 
The top of the Alamang is adorned with a typical heavy and deeply indented hilt of silver with deeply chased floral motifs, maitching the decorations on the scabbard.

I had the honor of acquiring this rare rare and exclusive Pedang from a collector from Mataram, Lombok. This man's collection is impressive, to say the least. I would be happy to tell you more about it upon request.

Alamang (in de Bugis-taal, soms Halamang of Lamang) of Sonri (in de Makassarese taal) is een heilig zwaard of hartsvanger van de Bugis- en Makassarese bevolking in Sulawesi, Indonesië.
 
De Alamang heeft een afgeplat, zwaar en diep ingesprongen greep. De rand en de rug van de kling zijn recht en evenwijdig. De rug buigt op de punt naar de rand.
 
De Alamang is een symbool van soevereiniteit, welvaart en waardigheid van een koninkrijk. Er wordt gezegd dat de koning in het verleden zijn koninkrijk nooit zou verlaten zonder zijn Alamang. Omdat het wordt beschouwd als de grootsheid van het koninkrijk, is de Alamang zeker zeer exclusief. Niemand, inclusief de empu (Kris-maker) of smid die heeft gesmeed, mocht kopieën van de Alamang maken, want dit was het wapen van de koning. Degenen die zich niet aan deze wet hielden, werden geëxecuteerd.
 
Deze Alamang komt oorspronkelijk uit Lombok. Bugis-mensen komen oorspronkelijk uit Sulawesi, maar omdat ze een zeevarende en handelsnatie waren, vestigden ze zich ook in andere delen van Indonesië, ook op Lombok.
 
De schede en de greep zijn volledig omhuld met zilver met verbazingwekkend gedetailleerde en diep gedreven florale motieven.
 
Op de voorkant van de schede is een even mooie toli-toli te bewonderen, bezet met 9 robijnen en saffieren.
 
De wilah (kling) van deze antieke Alamang is gesmeed met twee pamors; Kul Buntet aan de basis van de wilah en Ilining Warih die over de hele lengte van de wilah loopt. Ik heb de wilah ritueel en professioneel laten behandelen met warangan in Indonesië. De zilveren pamor contrasteert prachtig tegen de gitzwarte achtergrond van de wilah.
 
Op de bovenzijde van de Alamang prijkt een typisch zwaar en diep ingesneden handvat van zilver met diep gedreven bloemmotieven, passend bij de decoraties op de schede.

Ik had de eer deze zeldzame en exclusieve Pedang te mogen overnmen van een verzamelaar uit Mataram, Lombok. De collectie van deze man is op zijn minst indrukwekkend te noemen. Op verzoek vertel ik u er graag meer over
